Business/Technology Course Description PDF Print E-mail

Technology and Integrated Curriculum 1/2  (Grades 9-12)

Technology & Integrated Curriculum (TIC) is a two-semester interdisciplinary course that satisfies your Technology Foundations graduation requirement, prepares you for the technology demands of your academic classes at West Hills High School, and serves as a prerequisite to many of the intermediate and advanced technology classes in the Business and Technology Department.  In addition to keyboarding and office applications (Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation programs), students will learn audio, video, graphic/image, web, and multimedia production through a variety of class projects.  The intent of this course is to support and enhance academic learning through the use of technology.  This class also satisfies the foundation requirement for the Academy of Technology, Entertainment, Arts, and Media (The A-TEAM)

Technology Fundamentals (Grades 10-12)

This one semester course is designed to introduce students to a variety of current technologies including word processing, using the Internet for electronic research, basic web page design, and multimedia authoring and presentation.  Students use networked computers to connect to the Internet as well as to local and district electronic resources.  The software used in this course is cross platform for the use on both Macintosh and Windows operating systems.  This course fulfills the graduation requirement for Technology Foundations. 

ROP Computer Applications (Grades 11-12)

This ROP (Regional Occupational Program) course provides entry level and advanced training in current computer applications using Macintosh computers.  Instruction includes modules in operating systems, networking, word processing, using the Internet, web page design, multimedia authoring and presentation, desktop publishing, electronic spreadsheets and data base management.  All software used in this class is cross-platform for Macintosh and Windows operating systems.  Students will use state of the art equipment as well as the most current software used in businesses such as Microsoft Office.  Curriculum for up to four semesters of instruction is available.  Students enrolled in Computer Applications may obtain Technology Foundations graduation credit.

Web Page Design (Grades 10-12)

This two semester course is designed to build skill in web page design.  Basic and intermediate HTML commands will be covered including fonts, paragraphs, lists, tables, images, links, frames and forms.  Basic design and layout issues will be addressed.  Students will use state of the art equipment including digital cameras, computers, and scanners as well as the most current software used in web page design.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Technology Graduation requirement or instructor’s permission.

Computer Programming 1C/ 2C  (Grades 10-12)

Computer Programming 1C, 2C is a computer-programming course for the college-bound student that emphasizes the BASIC language. Students will learn to develop algorithms to solve problems, to write programs, and to diagnose errors in the algorithms and their problems.  Emphasis will be on advanced programming techniques, including string and file manipulation and operating systems. Two semesters of Computer Programming will be accepted by University of California to meet the “g” elective requirement.
Prerequisites include Computer Studies 1, Algebra 1C, or consent of the instructor.

Multimedia Production (Grades 10-12)

This yearlong course is for students who are interested in integrated multimedia production.  Students will create a variety of projects (audio, video, animation, podcasts, etc.) and host them via their own website.  This class can be counted toward the Academy of Technology, Entertainment, Arts and Media program (A-Team).

Audio Production (Special Studies) (Grades 10-12)

This yearlong special studies course is for students who are interested in the field of audio production.  Students will learn the basic techniques of recording, editing, and production techniques for music, radio, television, film, and live events.  Additionally, students will contribute to the production of WPR (Wolf Pack Radio).  This class can be counted toward the Academy of Technology, Entertainment, Arts, and Media program (A-TEAM).

Three Wolves Productions (Special Studies) (Grades 10-12)

This co-curricular class is for students who want to learn about a specific production technology while at the same time helping to produce a student-created show (or variety of shows) for the West Hills school community that will be broadcast over the Internet.  Types of shows that will be produced will depend on the skills and the interests of the class. It is recommended that student’s take the multimedia Production class prior to enrolling in the Three Wolves Productions class – but it is not required.  This class can be counted toward the Academy of Technology, Entertainment, Arts, and Media program (A-TEAM).  Students should choose an emphasis from the following codes:
  • WHO - for students interested in creating a web environment that will support the student-created shows.
  • WPR - for students interested in general audio production as well as developing and maintaining the fledgling Wolf Pack Radio, Internet radio station.
  • DVD - for students interested in video and DVD production.
  • SFX - for students interested in animation as well as creating specialized visual (and audio) effects for the video broadcasts.
  • GFX - for students interested in supporting graphic design and photography for the student-created shows.
