English 1/2  (Grade 9)

A 9th grade course offering basic communication skills such as grammar, composition, spelling, reading, and library/study skills, as well as broadening students’ understanding of mankind through study of literature.  College Prep and Honors meets the University of California “B” and “F” requirement.  Honors English classes are offered at the 9th and 10th grade also.  Curriculum is differentiated using extended group activities, independent study, and accelerated learning through core literature. Honors classes are open to any student willing to commit to a year long contract.

English 3/4 (Grade 10)

A sophomore course continuing exploration of the basic skills, creative and expository writing, and world literature.  College Prep and Honors meets the University of California “b” and “g” requirement.

English 5/6  (Grade 11)

An 11th grade course designed to emphasize American values and ideals through a study of American literature including practice for variety and style composition.  College Prep and Honors meets the University of California “b” and “g” requirement.

English 7/8  (Grade 12)

This senior course emphasizes communication skills, listening, talking, reading, and writing, and is designed for the student who realizes a need for greater skill in communication and a broader knowledge of literature.  In the C and H levels, college preparation is emphasized.  College Prep and Honors meets the University of California “b” and “g” requirement.

Advanced Placement English Language 1/2, English Literature 3/4 (Grades 11-12)

A course that teaches Advanced Placement English to juniors and/or seniors, as outlined in the syllabus on Composition/Literature.  This course meets the University of California “b” and “g” requirement.

Special Study English (Grades 11-12)

A one or two semester course which will be individualized to meet the needs of each student.  This will serve as a make-up course for the college prep student who needs to repeat a previously taken course for a better grade.  It will also serve as an instructional arena for the new senior student at West Hills who needs to be instructed in the mechanics of the West Hills Writing Program.

Journalism 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 (Grades 10-12)

Students enrolled in this class put out the student newspaper and perform auxiliary functions associated with their production responsibilities.  A supplementary application form must be completed, and the instructor’s permission will be required for placement in the course.

Publications 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 (Grades 10-12)

Students enrolled in this class produce the school yearbook.  All phases of production are covered, including computer usage, graphic design, photography principles and journalistic responsibilities.  Students are responsible for interviews, creating copy, photographs, designing page layouts, contacting the publisher, securing student payments and delivering the completed annual.  A supplementary application form must be completed, and the instructor’s permission will be required for placement in the course.
