Our department goals are to foster an appreciation of literature through reading and analysis, to prepare students for the rigors of college through expository texts, rhetorical writing, and technology, and generally to increase literacy for future generations.

The department has received the Golden Bell Award for our freshman writing program. It's a statewide competition and we were one of 25 schools out of 220 to receive first place awards.

In addition, for the last two years we have been working with SDSU/Grossmont and Cuyamaca college professors under a grant from Cal-Pass to align our curriculum with that of the Rhetoric and Writing class that college freshmen will take. We have designed and implemented several sequences at the 11th and 12th grade year, and next year we plan to work on sequences for the 9th and 10th graders.
