Physical Education, 9th (Grade 9)

A two-semester course required of students in grade 9.  This course is designed
to provide students with an opportunity to have physical activity, learn some life time sports, and to develop individual fitness and skills.  Instruction designed to satisfy the GUHSD First Aid Graduation requirement is included in this course.  The course is designed to take into consideration individual differences in the teaching of team sports, individual activities and aquatic activities.  This course is required for graduation.

Aerobic Dance (Grades 10-12)

A course including aerobic exercises designed to provide continuous movement in presentation, causing an elevated but safe heart rate for 30 to 45 minutes.  Instruction in the relationship of cardiovascular health to overall fitness will be included.

Weight Training (Grades 10-12)

A course designed to add bulk and/or strength to the student.  Instruction will be directed toward individual goals of the students.

Advanced Weight Training/Physical Fitness (Grades 11-12)

A course designed to improve the cardiovascular system of the student, concentrating on muscle tone and strength.  Students will also receive information on how the body functions and how to set up a personalized physical fitness program.  Offered zero period.

Advanced Sports Conditioning and Athletic Preparation (Grades 11-12)    

A rigorous two semester elective course designed for serious minded students who desire physical training and knowledge in preparing for sporting competition.  The students will participate in activities that will improve strength, speed, power, flexibility, aerobic endurance, and agility.  Offered sixth period.  Prerequisite: Completion of first year physical education.  To enroll in the class a student must be a member of the West Hills Football team.

Team Sports (Grades 10-12)

A course designed to provide intermediate instruction in various team sports which may include Flag Football, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and Team Handball, Hockey, Badminton, basketball, and volleyball.  Included will be instruction in skill knowledge of strategies, and rules of the sports.  This course is open to all students who have completed ninth grade physical education and will satisfy part of the two-year course requirement for physical education.  Course may be used as an elective credit.

Social Dance  (Grades 10-12)

A course designed to provide beginning and/or intermediate instruction in various social forms of dance (e.g., Swing, Line Country Western, etc.)  Included will be instruction in techniques and origins of each dance.  This course is open to all students who have completed ninth grade physical education and will satisfy part of the two-year course requirement for physical education.  Course may be used as an elective credit. 

Hip Hop Dance  (Grades 10-12)

Learn the latest dance craze while getting a workout in Hip-Hop dance.  This class is for all levels of dancers.  Come join the fun while receiving Physical Education credit.

Physical Education Assessment/Adaptive P.E.  (Grades 9-12)

Adaptive Physical Education is a course for students with permanent disabilities of a physical nature who cannot be serviced by a regular physical education program.  In addition to the overall goals of improving and maintaining fitness and developing lifetime activity skills, each student will participate in activities related to specific goals and objectives related to his/her individual need.  Students are initially placed in Physical Education Assessment at the time of referral for Adaptive Physical Education.  Here, the Adaptive P.E. teacher assesses them and an Individualized Education Plan for Physical Education is developed.
