Course Description
AP Chemistry is a challenging, second year chemistry class which builds upon topics mastered in the first year high school course. A college level textbook is used and the curriculum follows that prescribed by the college board for AP Chemistry. Emphasis is placed on chemical calculations, analytical reasoning and laboratory skills.
Instructional Goals
Students will
- be prepared to take and pass the AP Chemistry Exam in May.
- develop analytical reasoning skills, laboratory skills and the ability to solve challenging chemistry problems.
- emerge with study skills necessary for academic success at the college level.
Prerequisites
- Successful completion of first year Chemistry, with a grade of A or B.
- Strong math skills, preferrably concurrent enrollment in Pre-calculus or beyond.
Level and Type of Works
AP Chemistry is a demanding and challenging course which requires practice. Students are expected to spend approximately one hour of time outside of class per day on chemistry. This includes reading the textbook, completing practice problems assigned from the textbook or released AP exam questions and preparing for and completing lab work. A lab notebook will be maintained.
What will a student HAVE to do to be successful in this AP level class?
The course moves at a rapid pace. Keeping current and completing textbook readings and problem sets are critical for success. Regular attendance is also important.
Why should you take AP World History?
AP Chemistry will help prepare students for the rigor they will encounter as a science major at a four year university. For many pre-med, pre-vet and Biology majors, college level chemistry is one of the more demanding courses required of them. By taking AP Chemistry in high school, students will be better prepared for success.
Students will develop study skills, analytical problem solving and reasoning skills as well.
