Course Description
This rhetoric based (as opposed to literature based) course prepares students for the A.P. Language Exam AND their first year of college level English.  Students passing the test are exempted from 1st semester Freshman Composition at most universities. Students write argument and strategy based essays rather than strict literary analysis, although literature is also studied.

Instructional Goals
  1. Preparation for college level English
  2. Opportunity to read and comment on real-world issues
  3. Skills necessary to succeed in college no matter what they are majoring in (class skills are essential in all subject areas)
Prerequisites
  1. Sophomore Honors
  2. Sophomore college prep with grade of "A" or "B"
  3. Sophomore College prep with grade of "C" if student is willing to briefly meet with instructor to discuss rigor of class
Level and Type of Work
Students will study vocabulary weekly, take practice AP tests every 6 weeks, read 2-3 books per semester, read non-fiction pieces (2-3) per week.  Students will write in class essays twice per semester and a process paper once per semester.  Students will be allowed to RE-WRITE at least one of these papers.

We will also have weekly class discussions of authors' strategies and opinions.

What will a student HAVE to do to be successful in this AP level class?
Be willing to read, re-read, write, and re-write.  Any student who has a curiousity about the world in which they live AND has a good work ethic will succeed in this course.
