Course Description
The AP Spanish Language course covers the equivalent of a third-year college course in advance Spanish composition and conversation. It stresses oral and listening skills, written composition (formal and informal) and grammar. Since the course emphasizes in the use of Spanish for active communication it is taught entirely in Spanish and students are required to use the target language as well. Participation and the use of Spanish is a component of their grade. This course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities rather than to the mastery of any subject matter. Extensive training in the use of all language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) must be an integral part of the Advanced Placement Language course.
Instructional Goals
- Teach students the ability to comprehend formal and informal Spanish.
- Facilitate the acquisition of vocabulary and grasp of structure to allow the easy, accurate reading of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as of modern and classic Hispanic literature.
- Teach students techniques to have the ability to compose analytical and persuasive essays.
- Refine the ability to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.
Prerequisites
- Completion of 3rd year Spanish Honors with a grade of B or better.
- Completion of 3rd year Spanish College Prep with a grade of A and teacher recommendation.
- Native speaker of Spanish and teacher recommendation.
Level and Type of Work
Listening: Students are required to watch Spanish television once per week and write a report in Spanish on content.
Students will listen to Spanish radio newscasts and take notes using outlines and graphic organizers.
Students will practice listening exercises out of the textbook in preparation for the AP exam.
Reading: Students will read contemporary literary short stories, local and global newspaper articles in Spanish.
Writing: Students are required to have a daily journal in Spanish based on teacher prompts.
Students will write short stories in Spanish and other written projects to enhance comprehension.
Students will write informal notes and formal essays in preparation for the AP exam.
Speaking: Students will give Spanish formal and informal oral presentations in class.
Students will talk about their weekend on Mondays.
Group discussions and partner discussions are frequently required.
What will a student HAVE to do to be successful in this AP level class?
- Speak Spanish in and out of class.
- Watch Spanish television regularly
- Practice listening activities at home from textbook disc
- Attend weekend and vacation practice sessions
Why should students take this AP course?
There is and increasing emphasis of excellence in education as well as recognition that learning a foreign language at the high school and college level is important. A solid grounding in foreign language provides students with many valuable skills: the ability to communicate with people, the opportunity to understand a new body of printed material, and a way to interpret experience. Knowledge of a second language can also prove invaluable in a variety of professional activities, such as law, business, journalism, social work, and medicine.
In addition to the specific benefits of advanced study of the Spanish language, future AP students can also appreciate the general benefits of AP courses:
- Students are more likely to be accepted by the college of their choice when they have demonstrated an ability to do college-level work in an AP course.
- AP students may receive credit and\or advanced placement in college for the AP work done in high school. This can save money by enabling students to graduate from college earlier, and it can provide an opportunity for students to take additional courses in college—either to broaden a major or to explore a new field.
- Even though students do not receive credit or advanced placement in college, they will have experienced a rigorous course similar to those they will meet in college. They will have a head start in college-level material and can proceed with greater confidence.
