First Responder Minimum Requirements

 
Law Enforcement/Police  
  • U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident
  • Graduation from high school
  • Possession of 2 or 4 year degree (recommended)
  • Valid California Class C Drivers License 
 
Fire and Rescue
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Graduation from high school OR passage of the CHPSE or a GED program
  • Be a US citizen or have current legal right to work in the United States
  • Possess a valid California Class C Driver License 
  • Have valid certification in
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate or Paramedic License
    • CPR Card

For students interested in First Responder careers, there are a variety of tests that students have to pass in addition to a multitude of background checks. Check with the individual program you are interested in, to ensure you meet the minimum requirements.

Financial Aid

ALL STUDENTS should apply for Financial Aid through the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is one application that automatically applies you for all the grants, work study, and loans that will help you pursue your education to become a First Responder
 
 

How to get started:

1. Go to the only verified FAFSA Application
2. Click on "Create Account" 
3. Both student and a parent/guardian will need to electronically sign the FAFSA by creating an FSA ID

2) Education & Training
Complete a Fire Technology or Police Academy program at a local community college to ensure the best preparation.
 
3) Licensed in Trade
For students pursuing apprenticeships, reaching journeyman status means increase pay, opportunity and benefits.
